See what you can find when you are going through old emails! This was a trip in August 2008.

a.k.a the "we think we are 20" road trip. We've got a full tank of gas, our sunglasses on and a bottle of...........ibuprofen!!!! Karen and I left Portland and drove down to Grants Pass (almost to California border). We crossed over the mountains at Bear Pass to get to the coast. This road is not open in the winter....remember the couple that got stranded and the husband tried to walk for help and died last winter???? Yeah, that Pass!!!! Imagine sharp hairpins the entire time on a single lane road that allows for two way traffic!!!! Most of the traffic are the trucks with the dinghies coming back up the mountain so people can ride down the Rogue River and they don't give a shit that anyone else is on the road. Let me tell you, Karen (aka Kazz) is the best driver ever!!!

At the summit, the eagles were flying at eye level. I'm surprised the knocking of my knees was not scaring them away!!! I seriously could barely get out of the car from passenger exhaustion!!! We arrived at the coast and splurged on a hotel on the beach so we could fall asleep to the sound of the ocean. The next day we headed down 101 (not Highway 1 right on the coast but still so beautiful) to San Anselmo just north of San Fran. We left Oregon at 58 degrees and got to Santa Rosa at 99!!! The redwoods in Northern Cali are magnificent. If you ever have time you need to put this on a "must visit" list. I wish we had more time to stop but we were on a mission. We had a blast visiting Jennifer and Ken for two days and then we drove home in one day....11 hours from door to door and 1400 miles in total!!! O yeah, and we drove thru 111 degrees in northern Cali...I put my hand out the window of the car and the wind felt like it was burning my skin!!!

This next part makes me sound a little crazy! So, after the five day "we think we are 20" road trip, I stayed in Portland for four more days and then I flew back to Oakland, California, the closest airport to San Anselmo, to stay with Jennifer. I could have let Kazz drive home by herself but once I saw I could get a flight for $80, why not finish the trip? Where in Canada can you fly the equivalent of a 10 hour drive for $80 I ask you? I have been to aquatic fitness twice...today in an outdoor pool. It's gorgeous working out in the sun in a pool. In San Anselmo area, it is usually around 80 with a cool breeze this time of year. The day we went in to San Fran, it was 60 in the city and I nearly froze!!! Always remember to layer here! Yesterday we drove up to Calistoga Hot Springs and we spent the day at the mineral pools...4 pools, various temperatures, one is a whirlpool. For $5 for the whole day you get the use of the mineral pools, lounge chairs, they provide towels, you bring your own food and BOOZE...champagne all day by the pool...plus cabanas so you never really get too hot. Very civilized!!! The day closed with a gorgeous early evening drive home thru Sonoma and Napa Valley.

For my last few days here, we will be visiting a Buddhist monastery, Spirit Rock, for one of the Monday night "talks and meditations" which I am really looking forward to. We also are going back into San Fran for the Frida Kahlo exhibit and then, on the Long Weekend, we are headed to the coast!
The first event is from Nov 2013, near the end of the run of Bowie is. Hindsight?? Should have gone earlier so I could go twice, it was that good. As it was, I went the second last week and could not fit it in again sadly. I spent 3 hours and barely had enough time for the last room where I could have sat for a very long time. How did he know his fabulousness and realize from the start to keep everything! All items in the exhibition were from his own collection that he maintains himself! The drawings of sets, costumes and even the haircuts for his first bands and the video of a mime performance stand out for me. For more details, here's one link, kind of academic http://www.ago.net/david-bowie-is-coming-to-the-ago-this-fall or this one for a killer blog about her experience by the forestcityfashionista aka Shelley. http://www.forestcityfashionista.com/2013_11_01_archive.html Will tell you about the other event I can't erase in another blog soon. Notice I am not commenting on how long it has been since my last blog!
Waaaaay back in July of 2012, I went to the Design Exchange with my friend Christina who was here from St. John's Nfld. for the Adella Campallo workshop. We literally ran out between classes to fit this in and it was worth it, even the 10 min sprint in a heatwave to get back to class on time:)

The event, known as The Tutu Project was held in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the National Ballet of Canada. Sixty originals and 12 of the companies most famous tutus were on display including Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, Gisele, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet and, of course, Swan Lake.
As I have been purging and organizing my life this past month, I have come across blogworthy stuff from 2013.

I said goodbye to 2013 with a wiping of the brow and a great big exhale, phew! As some of you know it was a year overshadowed by the loss of two long-time friends. I thought I had thicker skin after dealing with the loss of my parents but I found out that indeed, I did not. With a 3 week stay in London for Christmas and spending quality time with friends and a lot of time sleeping, I started to finally feel myself again. Truthfully, I wasn't sure it would happen so yay 2014...feeling more myself every day:)

This tree makes me smile so I thought I would share. It stands in a super tiny little "park" near Vineland, ON. Tree huggers unite! The care and devotion for the Comfort maple is extraordinary. Not sure how it made it through this years ice and snow but will check with some friends to find out.
I love docs...docs at TIFF, docs at Bloor Cinema, and most recently, docs at Hot Docs. The weather could not have been more brilliant for standing in line and chatting with fellow docophiles (hmm, did I just make up a word?) My programme was well circled and high-lighted but, due to time constraints, I had to curtail myself (a lot) while still managing to miraculously fit in three of my top choices. Articles and trailers follow for Tiny, The Man Who Made Angels Fly, Everybody Street and Flo.

http://thetfs.ca/2013/04/27/hot-docs-review-tiny-a-story-about-living-small/

For those of you that have heard me say I want to go off the grid and live in a trailer, this is what I'm talking about!! BUT, I am more of a tiny-near-the-city as opposed to tiny-in-the-middle-of-nowhere kind o' gal.

http://www.hotdocs.ca/film/title/man_who_made_angels_fly

Unbelievable art form. His ability to recreate minute movement with stringed marionettes took your breath away. Sadly could not stay for the q&a after, would have loved to have heard more.

http://everybodystreet.com/

I attached a long review but so many great clips and info about the photographers. Some of it's pretty raw.

This was my fav! It was a short that played before Everybody Street. Meet Flo, she's sheer inspiration:) I only looked briefly but if you can find the full length version (15 min??), it's so brilliant.

Enjoy:)

Since January already! I really shut down and the couch was the champion in the battle to pass the darkness of winter. Mad Men, Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones (5 books + video), Arrow, Person of Interest, Smash, Republic of Doyle, Big Bang, a few others I surfed from time to time, and of course, the Y&R all consumed and consoled me. On occasion, I managed to attend a blog worthy event.
What is that pile I keep making bigger but never seem to go through??? Notes on scraps of paper, newspaper clippings, ticket stubs, concert programmes, business cards and that's just the top half.

So glad I kept the programme from my first experience attending the Toronto Symphony Orchestra conducted by Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos. Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Op. 93 (for those of you in the know:))) was so beautiful. The acoustics, uuufff! Centennial Hall it ain't. The second half of the programme was La vida breve (an opera-in-concert) written in 1905. So, imagine full orchestra on stage with The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (120+members) in an upper balcony behind and then 9 singers and 1 dancer all in a row in front of the orchestra. Talk about park and honk! Not exciting staging but how it was meant to be performed.

Synopsis, Granada, turn of the 20th century, a marriage promise is made to a beautiful gypsy girl, her intended arrives, a "rapturous duet" occurs and then he leaves. She, her sister and grandmother discover another promise has been made and a wedding to a wealthy socialite is to take place the next day, lots of anger and angst and scheming.

The jilted fiance appears at the wedding, misery. The groom sees her, nervous. She offers to sing and dance for the guests, insert flamenco dancer here, jilted fiance denounces groom and falls dead at his feet. The end.

Enjoyable even though I was in a very bad seat. Will know better for next time. The most memorable singer is in the clip below. She is an extraordinary mezzosoprano who made all the other performers pale in comparison. I couldn't find a clip of same opera but I liked this link the best because the set and costumes are kick-ass!!

Enjoy Christina Faus:)
The AGO curated an amazing collection for the Kahlo/Diego show which ends Jan 20. So, all you last minute people, it's worth fitting it in.

Really enjoyed seeing Diego's artistic breadth. He could paint in the style of the Grand Masters as well as abstract and I've been a fan of his murals forever. The content of some of Frida's self-portraits tend to unsettle me but seeing the detail of her work up close, man, check out how she paints hair. Fine tiny perfect brush stokes every time.

Being articulate today is proving quite strenuous, so I'm going to cut this short. There was also a fabulous ofreta to acknowledge the Day of the Dead and some oversize skeletal Day of the Dead "puppets" of Diego and Kahlo which were a surprise after you left the gift shop. Might I just say, it was the best gift shop I have ever seen. Special bonus if you go now, I hear everything is 50% off!!!

We finished off the show with a hot chocolate and a Kahlo cookie!

PS check out Barbara Kingsolver's book, The Lacuna, to spend some more time with Diego and Frida.

Been up to some non-flamenco activity again this month....it's like giving up something for Lent....gotta do it every now and then to see what is really in control of your life.

Just spent an hour or so catching up on my other fav blog sites and got inspired/guilted in to posting. So back to Dougie and sudafed!!!

Rhonda Nolan and I went to hear Douglas lecture at a Harbourfront series (see link below). He was so apologetic from the get-go about being bitten by some evil flu bug that affected his throat etc. Why he chose Sudafed I have no idea but he decided that one was not enough and chose to superdose himself. Et voila!! The spacing out was evident. But, you know what? DC on 5 Sudafeds is still an unbelievable brain to experience.

I have been a fan since I read Polaroids from The Dead and have all his books, some of them signed. I waited one time for 3 hours to chat with him at a book signing. He's not everyone's cup of tea and I certainly can say his latest, Highly Inappropriate Tales for Young People, is exactly that!!! Don't need that one in my collection. He's my renaissance man, books, television, art, installations, design. I admire and am jealous of his brain all at the same time.
hmmmm, limited attention span not allowing me to ponder any further how to not publish trailers in two separate posts. Had another one posted in Think Pink post but liked official trailer better.Donnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11538429115112928057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-330213402641515570.post-11007571241545728292012-11-18T11:13:00.001-08:002012-11-18T11:22:11.099-08:00Bill Cunningham New York Trailer

this is a film for anyone...you don't even need to like fashion...be charmed by a "gentle man" in the truest sense of the word, admire a keen observer, applaud a man with principles, see how to age with grace and charm and, you just have to see his apartment!!! A lesson learned about knowing what you need.Donnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11538429115112928057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-330213402641515570.post-17787956901012068862012-11-18T10:52:00.000-08:002012-11-18T11:10:44.499-08:00Diana Vreeland & Funny FaceJust cleaning out my purse and found my stub from TIFF Bell Lightbox for Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel. Well worth a look see for all fashionistas and if you are a pop culture junkie, she hung with them all. Photos of nights out and galas and parties are a treat. I left the film admiring her chutzpa and accomplishments and would have loved to have had a cocktail (or two) with her! It's not the connection you make with Bill Cunningham, New York but a deserving story to be told.

Plus, my favourite scene from Funny Face was fashioned after her, so more love by association.

My only comment about the Vreeland film is that the thought behind "the eye has to travel" is great for a still photo but for moving images??? I was constantly saying, "wait, I wasn't done looking at that". Good ploy, makes me want to own it so I can spend more time with content.

Separate post for Vreeland and Cunningham trailers!!
I came to TO to be taken over by flamenco and I can say it's almost 100%!! Three dance classes, 1 singing class for sure each week and another 2 opportunities to sing depending on work and then, as much as possible, I am practicing lyrics and choreography and listening to FlamencoBeat Radio out of Vancouver!!! I added two dance classes since September (thanks, Loblaws!) and they are kicking me in the butt, literally, forgot how much dancing for two hours makes your hamstrings scream and burn.

I am concentrating in dance on bulerias and tangos. For examples, google either of those palos (styles) on you tube either for baile or cante and you will see a gazilliono (that's Spanish, just add o, right Grant???) Not so specialized por cante, learning all kinds of palos.

In October, I studied cante for a week with Gema Caballero during the Toronto Flamenco Festival. Ooops, I posted a you tube clip of Gema singing, gorgeous voice, that posted separately!! We were learning siguriyas (one of the many possible spellings). It is one of the hardest styles to understand the rhythm and how the words flow in and out of the rhythm. It has taken me years to comprehend the palmas (clapping) for this palo. I learned a lot and feel way more comfortable supporting a dancer or singer with palmas now. Not sure I am ready to take on singing for a dancer!! Baby steps....

Enjoy Gema!!
Shelley and I attended a Vintage Sale at the Barns and my eyes were opened to a truly fabulous retrofit of an old TTC facility.

Here's the link: http://torontoartscape.org/artscape-wychwood-barns (damn, once again I am reminded that I have not figured out how to get the links to hyperlink for you!!!) The info and photos and videos of the history and development of this once industrial space into a community centre for the arts makes me smile. This is what people can do!!! Check it out for sure.

Here's the link for the vintage sale too. http://antiqueshowscanada.com/gadsdens-toronto-vintage-clothing-show-fall/. The next sale is in April , 2013 I believe.

You aren't exhausted just thinking about going (like how I feel about going to the One of a Kind sale!!!) You can have a good snoop in a few hours and still have time to chat with the friendly vendors and customers. The quality is high and is priced accordingly but there is always a treasure or two to be found at your price point!! Last year I found an extraordinary linen tea towel with each month represented by a dance from around the world. Of course, you can imagine the squeeee I emitted when one of the months was flamenco. This year I found two adorable brooches that I could not leave behind. I must admit though, the reason I was so looking forward to going this year, was just to be back in the space...it is energizing inside and out. Cool neighbourhood as well.
I was introduced to Summerworks 2012 by a friend who was set designer for the play Violent be Violet. Summerworks is Fringe like, various locations around the downtown area etc. but differs from Fringe in that selections are juried.

The lead actor was also the playwright and she had a phenomenal supporting cast. Tanisha barely left the stage for the entire hour and you could not take your eyes off her. Here's a review that won't give away anything and although the play is truly an intense look at mental illness, it was brilliant. I can see some people in LO theatre world being interested in this play if it is available???

http://www.mooneyontheatre.com/2012/08/13/violent-be-violet-fine-wine-theatre-2012-summerworks-review/

Big thumbs up for Summerworks, spend a few days in TO, enjoy the August weather, fine plays plus music events (Hawksley Workman, Buck 65), put it on your list.

Now I want to rave about Global Cabaret 2012. I once again only heard about it at the last minute and saw only one event. Put this on your calendar if you are looking for a weekend in the city in October. Held at the Yonge Centre for the Performing Arts in the Distillery District, this alone makes it worth checking out. Any theatre built with a bar at the back? Well, you know it's gotta be good. Awesome lobby with bar and food service, and tables if you arrive early and a fireplace! Lovely.

I would have gone to about 6 shows easily, no problem. If you want to spend a weekend listening to jazz, folk, showtunes, pop, gospel, classical in a fantastic setting for a great price, this is the ticket....$20 per or $108 for full festival pass.....(2 dozen events). Big bang for the buck. Check out some of the performers and you will understand why.
At the time, I mentioned I would post a more recent quote that I had kept in one of my "five boxes of life" and here it is.

I came across this quote in a Victoria magazine sometime in the 90's. That magazine was one of the several I had to wean myself off of....bit of a magazine addiction back in the day. Probably the least offensive of others I can think of...another post perhaps!!!

This particular quote is from Cross Creek by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and parallelled the sentiment of my previous quote with the message of living the life you love. Marjorie was a pretty spectacular woman and you should check out her bio here. Sorry, you'll have to cut and paste.
This certainly reflects major life decisions that she made for herself and I like it too:)))Donnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11538429115112928057noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-330213402641515570.post-90991784413210483022012-09-09T18:05:00.000-07:002012-09-09T18:05:09.830-07:00Farewell popcorn land Been off the blog because of 1) way too many shifts in popcorn land 2) training for a new job at Loblaws that suddenly came up 3) a popcorn land wrist injury that made typing painful (almost 100% better) and 4) a hellacious bug that laid me flat for about 5 days and two weeks later I am still coughing!!

What do I do on my first day of no longer being a Cineplex employee?? Went to a movie!! (Cast pass=free). For my last shift, I was assigned to "floor" which means I kept washrooms and theatres clean for 6 hours plus I did theatre checks. Have you ever noticed staff come in during a movie and look like they want to be anywhere else but in that theatre and then, they go to a piece of paper on the side wall and write something? That is a theatre check. You are checking that sound and picture quality are OK, too hot, too cold, no noisy audience members....and you are to do so every 30 minutes. I don't have to go see Possession now(if I had ever wanted to). I did not, however, mind going in to check on Dark Knight (Imax and non Imax versions). I wasn't supposed to stand and watch but it's my last night, what are they going to do? Fire me???

So, Cineplex, cheers to you and my brief employee stint from May 5, 2012 until September 8, 2012. Best perk? Free movie passes once a week. Did I have time to go to a movie once a week? Absolutely not! What did I see? Dark Shadows, Avengers, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Hunger Games, Step Up Revolution, Moonrise Kingdom and Robot & Frank.

Least liked? Sadly Dark Shadows. Favourite? Dark Knight followed closely by Avengers. Most delightful? Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Fav quirky and clever? Moonrise Kingdom hands down with kudos to Robot & Frank. Not exactly a Siskel & Ebert quality review but short and sweet, just like my length of employment with Cineplex!Donnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11538429115112928057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-330213402641515570.post-75759605322182774562012-07-25T20:11:00.000-07:002012-07-25T20:11:56.268-07:00dancin, dancin, she's a dancin machine!First workshop in two years and I'm alive and it's day three!!! Seriously, Monday night my left knee and ball of left foot hurt so much I was having panic attacks that I might not be able to make it through the rest of the week. But, after ice and stretching the following day (and some alcohol the night of), I managed to feel pretty darn good for the next two days.

I am working on a tangos (nothing at all like ballroom/Argentine). It's a dance for a party atmosphere so it's a cute/sexy/fun/tongue-in-cheek kind of dance. We are learning a choreography but you can pull it apart to use and make it your own. The best thing ever is that when I get home I can actually remember the choreography instead of everything being a-huge-blank-as-it-was-so-fast-and-so-beyond -my-skill-set-that-I-shouldn't-have-spent-the-$$$-to-be-in-that-class-kind-of-black-hole!!! Wow, after 8 years I am sort of starting to get this madness called flamenco!

My day is coming to an early end and my bed is calling to me. Night all!Donnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11538429115112928057noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-330213402641515570.post-22791288822817433702012-07-14T19:14:00.001-07:002012-07-14T19:18:21.853-07:00and it's July part 2hmmmm, for some reason video did not link to my first posting. Just tried it again, and no.

Beer, people watching, a small performance stage, a Punch and Judy type show and food and art vendors. The show I saw was entitled Numbers...the artist doing live painting during the performances is a friend of mine from flamenco and the director Lukas, also has connections to flamenco. A brief description of the show makes you wonder how it can work but work it did!!
Fringe Toronto has 155 shows to see over the week. You need serious time to choose your venues and travel time and decide what shows you want to see. I had a selection but something else always came up....like sitting on a patio with a friend you ran in to.

I did get to see Coast Modern at the Bloor Cinema this week which was brilliant. Thanks to Sandra in LO for letting me know what's going on in TO!!! You are 2 for 2 in recommendations for fabulous films.
Couldn't find a link with film footage but this is the best, if somewhat lengthy, article about the film and the history of this architectural style. It's the landscaping and view of garden/forest that I really love....and, I'm becoming a minimalist about stuff. I still like me a couch with comfy cushions and an arm to lean your back up against while snuggled up reading a book or watching a movie. Mostly I love the open concept of these homes. I could live in one big room (with a private bath!!!) and be quite happy.

oops, you might have to cut and paste these linksDonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11538429115112928057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-330213402641515570.post-29727638143775357492012-07-05T08:24:00.002-07:002012-07-05T08:24:42.903-07:00and it's July!!Yes, I was in popcorn land for the Long Weekend, that's all I have to say about that!

I am going to get to some Toronto Fringe shows over the next week which makes me very happy and my birthday is coming up and I booked the day off to do something entertaining. Will let you know what I come up with!!!

What I am really excited about is a week-long dance workshop coming up July 23-28! Yeah, it's been a while since I have danced every day so it's excitement combined with checking my Advil supply. I am going to be studying a palo (style) called tangos (not to be confused with what you see on DWTS!!) I am excited as it is a palo I am fairly comfortable with dancing and singing(not at the same time) so I may actually finish off the week being able to remember and use choreography in the future. That is major, usually you are so overwhelmed at the pace of the classes, you can't remember a thing!!!
